Technologists demonstrate the MetraSCAN BLACK™|Elite 3D scanner that, like two large supersonic eyes, scans objects of any shape, complexity and geometry in real time.
On Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May, Rovereto hosted the Wired Next Fest, the landmark festival of innovation in Italy. In the exhibition spaces dedicated to industrial research, ProM Facility had the opportunity to present itself to the public and show the functioning of one of the tools used at the mechatronic prototyping centre in Rovereto.
The protagonist is the MetraSCAN BLACK™|Elite 3D scanner that, with an accuracy of 0.025 millimetres equivalent to less than the thickness of a hair, enables the transition from scanning to three-dimensional reconstruction of objects (including 3D printed objects) made of titanium, polymer and other materials.
What does the MetraSCAN 3D scanner look like?
It is a portable scanner that is easy to set up and use. It uses 15 laser crosses that, like two large eyes, photograph the object and accurately reproduce its composition. Very useful in product development and quality control activities.

Which objects were scanned at the Wired Next Fest?
Everyday objects were chosen to show how the unique 3D scanner works, such as hats, 3D printed models, stickers and even a bicycle frame.
The younger audience was captivated by the 3D scanning of parts of the body, from the face to the arms, which was useful to understand the limitations of the instrument: if we try to scan an object that cannot stand still, the result will not be accurate because the scan is so fast that the movement generated by the act of breathing is intercepted by the 3D scanner to the detriment of accuracy and repeatability.
There were many spectators and a lot of interest from industry experts and manufacturing companies.
